A true family affair, Tim and Mimi Spear were married in 1995. An accomplished wine maker already, Tim was offered the opportunity to produce his own wine out of three tons of très divin syrah. In 2000, after producing three vintages of his own wine at Creston Vineyards (where he worked as assistant winemaker), Creston was closing and it was time to focus on Clos Mimi. Producing syrah exclusively, Tim has gained the reputation for well crafted, cutting edge wines that set the standard for American syrahs.

Recently, Clos Mimi has christened it’s newest addition to the family: a full modern, feng shui’d winery. Tim’s attention to history and classical techniques are clearly balanced with the best equipment and strongest passion. This winery breaths life and energy from the single minded Syrah to the family photos dotted across their website.

Clos LaChance Wines, located in San Martin, California started its life as a backyard winery planted by Bill and Brenda Murphy to fulfill their lifelong dream of owning a winery. They never expected a commercial success but five years after their first planting of Chardonnay in 1987, they realized their grapes were strong enough to release a commercial vintage.

Clos LaChanceoffers three ranges of wines: the Special Selections Series, the Estate Series and the Hummingbird Series. Each wine in the Hummingbird series, the most cost friendly of the three, is named after a different species of hummingbird that the owners feel in some way represent that particular varietal.

Today, the Clos LaChance is situated in a beautiful location overlooking rolling hills and adjacent golf course. Open daily for tastings and tours, the winery offers a long list of wines and newly constructed bocce court to pass the afternoon.

Originally planted in 1970, Napa Valley’s Clos Du Val Wine Company is home to four varietals planted over three vineyards in two appellations. When originally planted, the winery only grew Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Zinfandel but began planting Pinot Noir in Carneros in 1981.
The winery made a name for itself right off the bat when their 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen as a participant in the now famous 1976 Paris tasting. This tasting placed well known French labels against a number of Californian wines. The wine did very well, beating out a number of French cabernets, but really proved its strength in the 1986 and 2006 rematches. In the 10th anniversary rematch, Clos Du Val took first place, followed by a slight fall in 2006, still beating out a number of Bordeauxs. The winery now produces three tiers of each of their wines: Classic, Reserve and Flagship. Tastings are available daily onsite with a variety of tasting and tour options. Check out their website for further information.

With over 200 acres dedicated to growing Muscadine grapes, Shannon Vineyards released its first 6 bottles of wines in 2008. While the Muscadine grape is not a widely known grape in other parts of the U.S. or even the world, it is a common staple in the Southeast.
